Embracing Change:
A Collaborative Approach to Future Healthcare
HEALTHCARE DESIGN
NOVEMBER 2020
The healthcare industry is in a period of significant change as it seeks to manage the emerging needs of multiple generations living in a new era of health challenges and innovation brought forth by a global pandemic. Building upon this, expanded healthcare programs and the option for more affordable healthcare has resulted in an increasingly more diverse patient population. The importance of addressing mental health challenges and involving patients and specialists in a collaborative approach to healthcare are being recognized. Consequently, healthcare spaces must be re-envisioned to support these emerging goals and values.
Embracing Change leverages a language of familiarity (the vernacular) to create an inclusive environment that supports patients through concepts of empowerment and engagement towards a more active role in care. Pattern language, a refined palette, and natural materials throughout draw from the vernacular Chicago geography as a waterfront city to create a grounded interior experience which welcomes participants with divergent backgrounds and needs. An interlocking spatial layout with collaboratively focused exam rooms and offices integrate patients, practitioners, and specialists of various fields in a dynamic healthcare experience (Schultz).
On-stage zones, such as the waiting room and exam rooms focus on both individual and family comfort. These areas prioritize privacy through various architectural screens and spatial organization, and anticipate companionship through the integration of guest seating and pod-style seating arrangements. On-stage zones also prioritize access to information. Interactive technology engages patients at virtual check-in kiosks and in exam spaces to provide greater access to information regarding their health. Linguistically inclusive signage is provided to respond to the diverse population of visitors and is provided throughout on-stage spaces to enhance circulation by creating clarity and empowering visitors by removing confusion. Visual distractions including strategic exterior views and custom artwork further enhance patient experience by creating an interior which redefines the traditional perception of a “healthcare space” and aims to reduce anxiety.

FURNITURE + FINISH SELECTION
Unique to this project are the intermediary zones which embrace both patients and practitioners. These spaces include triage spaces and staff touchdown spaces both of which open off of circulation. This design promotes the idea that the corridor is not wasted space, but rather a place to make connections. As such, these touch-down moments provide open access to technology for staff members to more rapidly connect with data and other practitioners thus reducing time away from patients. The placement of these spaces off of staff and patient circulation additionally reduces staff travel time and creates a sense of transparency for patients, demystifying the care process and more actively including patients.

Off-stage zones recognize the unique challenges and needs of staff and specialists, especially in a rapidly evolving field. Work spaces are designed to allow flexibility and connection. Mobile furniture and integrated technology in exam spaces allow practitioners to collaborate more efficiently with patients and to shift work styles depending on the need for in-person interaction or remote (tele-health) interactions (Cahnman). The administrative suite clusters team members together to promote collaboration and ease of communication.
