Intro-Schism
EDUCATIONAL + ARTISTIC | 2019
Intro-Schism creates an introspective journey which invites visitors to reflect on their place in the environmental, nutritional, and humanitarian schism of factory/industrial farming.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
How can college students and campus visitors become more educated about the environmental, nutritional, and humanitarian impact of factory farming? How can the built environment become a vehicle for education?
PROCESS
The design is informed by the materiality of factory farms and the religious practice of meditation and introspection.
OUTCOMES
The labyrinth layout of three cylindrical forms guide participants along a meditative path, while the high walls and translucent red materiality provoke a slight feeling of unease. As participants traverse the path the core they encounter poignant information about the effects of factory farming. At the core they are invited to reflect on their role in the issues and their potential to become a part of the solution.
